Wantin

The self-publishing review group made the following statement about the protagonist, Talia Jacobs: ‘Talia is the type of person everyone wishes they knew but very few get to meet.’

It was a delight to read such a powerful statement echoing the reflection of what I was aiming to create with the reader engagement when I wrote the trilogy. Talia is her own person. A clandestine individual who sees the world through her own unique style of assessment and understanding. She internalizes an immense amount and trusts few. Life has consistently reminded her that she is responsible for herself and that she must be accountable and responsible for her choices. There is a balance of strength and weakness in her that is depicted throughout the series. She admits to her mistakes and attempts to right her wrongs where possible. Talia has a natural ability to evoke strong connections with all who cross her path.

When writing my books I honestly struggle to capture what I find would be the right balance of information for a blurb to entice a reader to engage further without divulging any spoilers. I can labour for hours, days, even weeks on what I am choosing to place on the back cover as a promotional tid bit. This is purely because I come from a mindset that reading should be an indulgent pleasurable journey of the mind where preconceived ideas are left behind. When I capture the story I aim to ensure there is no way for the readers to predict what will happen next. My intent is to have people’s mind reeling about the possibilities, therefore allowing them the opportunity to invest their own emotions into it as the story unfolds. Its a crucial application of strategy on my part to maintain a level of excitement in the work that I create for you to read.

Wantin’s Blurb:

Fate is relentless in its pursuit of Talia Jacobs. Presented with unimaginable turns of chance, she is drawn into the depths of tragic losses then catapulted to the extraordinary heights of life’s joy. Take the journey with Talia as she undergoes her sexual, social and physical metamorphosis from a vulnerable girl into a mature young seductress. Nothing in life is ever as it seems. Is she blessed or cursed? Will she ever find the man who will love her like no other, fearlessly caressing the deepest part of her being while intertwining his soul to hers in a dance that holds the unspoken promise of forever?

As you can see the blurb gives you hints of the story being involved but it doesn’t allude to what the plot is truly about. In talking to reviewers post their assessment of the book I found a large portion of them said the blurb did not do the story justice and that they were taken on an emotional roller coaster ride of epic proportions. This made me smile, confirming I had managed to hit a sweet spot with how I structure and convey the story for the readers and my blurb gave nothing away.

I acknowledge that many people may overlook my work because readers are conditioned to making decisions on knowing ‘more’ about the story before deciding whether they will invest in purchasing a book. Given the market is now saturated with a plethora of self published titles, I completely understand the need to be discerning about where their hard earned dollars are spent. It still doesn’t entice me to divulge too much. The surprise element of the stories I write will always be a priority for me to preserve. The response I have received from a majority of the trilogy readership has only given confirmation of the importance of not spoiling the journey for those who invest in the time in reading my work.
